Essentials

In June 2008, after six successful years, ISC was forced to move from its beautiful south-east country location to the west end of Edmonton.  The resulting drop in enrollment forced the school to close in February 2009.  In December 2009, Staff Members Nicolette Groeneveld and Mark Ogle restarted ISC  as a Sudbury home schooling group.  The search continues for a suitable, permanent location and the funding required to redevelop ISC as a full-fledged Sudbury Campus.

Mediation:

Mediation is a process that helps students to deal with a conflict right in the moment.

• Anyone involved in or witnessing an escalating conflict can say "Mediation!"
• An objective third person is called in.
• The mediator and the conflicting individuals discuss the problem and work out a solution all parties agree to.

Judicial Committee
JC basics:
• The JC is made of one staff member and four students.
• The JC is staffed on a rotating basis.
• Every two weeks the Campus Meeting Chair selects and posts a list of the people who will form the JC.
• The JC meets Mon - Friday at 11:00 unless no JC reports have been written.

JC process:
• A student or staff writes a JC report because s/he feels someone has broken the Campus rule.
• At the JC meeting, the person who wrote the report and the person written up tell their sides of the story.  The JC charges all those they feel have broken a Campus rule.
• The people charged are asked to plead responsible or innocent.
• If a person pleads innocent, the case goes to a trial at Campus Meeting.
• If a person pleads responsible, the accused is invited to determine his/her consequence. If s/he doesn’t know what to suggest, s/he may ask for suggestions from the JC.
• A consequence must be passed by a majority vote of the JC.

Benefits to students:
• students express "negative" emotions in an appropriate, healthy way• students honor themselves, stand up for their rights and voice discontent
• students take responsibility for their choices and find a way to correct a problem
• creation of non-shaming consequences that are fair and reasonable
• peaceful problem-solving
• negotiation and compromise
• consequence vs punishment
• leadership skills
• efficient running of a meeting
• discernment
• compassion
• punctuality
• cause rather than symptom relief
• honesty
• critical thinking
• listening skills and taking turns speaking
